Inside PopLab’s 3-Stage path: From foundations to professional sound

The three stages of music creation

At PopLab Zurich, our songwriting & music production course is built around a structured three-stage approach. In the first stage, you’ll build creative confidence and learn the fundamentals as you create your first original tracks. The second stage focuses on exploring your artistic identity, developing your style, shaping your sound, and deepening your skills. In the final stage, you’ll refine your craft to a professional level, polishing your songs and production for release-ready quality.

Choosing your primary subject: Music production, songwriting or both

While both songwriting and music production are essential for any modern music creator, we understand that everyone has different goals. Some students may want to focus more heavily on music production, while others may prefer a deeper emphasis on songwriting development. When booking your course at PopLab Zurich, you can choose your primary subject or keep a balanced 50/50 split — which we generally recommend for most creators.

In Stage 1, all students follow a 50/50 split between songwriting and production to build a strong foundation before specializing. This gives you the essential tools to grow as a well-rounded artist, songwriter or producer in later stages.

Building a career in today’s music industry is challenging and we won’t pretend otherwise. With music creation more accessible than ever, the expectations for modern creators have skyrocketed.
